THE MEDICINES WE CARRY

Mapacho

The medicine that asks us to ground.

Mapacho is sacred Amazonian tobacco, held very differently from the commercial tobacco many people are familiar with.

Within BUFAYA, Mapacho is Grandfather medicine. We work with him through offering, clearing, protection, grounding, and preparation, both on his own and alongside deeper ceremonial work.

His presence is steady. Before asking someone to open, Mapacho can help them arrive.

THE MEDICINE
We know Mapacho as Grandfather medicine.

The Grandfather Spirit.

Within the teachings we carry, Mapacho holds a powerful relationship with the plant world. We were taught to understand Grandfather Mapacho as a protector, teacher, and medicine recognized by the plants themselves.

There is an understanding within this relationship that Mapacho carries authority among the plants. This is part of why his presence can be found around so much Amazonian medicine work.

We approach Mapacho as a medicine with his own spirit and relationship, not simply as smoke being added to a ceremony.

Before Mapacho is something we work with, he is someone we acknowledge.

RELATIONSHIP

An offering before asking.

Medicine work is not only about what we receive.

Within BUFAYA, Mapacho may be offered to the medicine, the land, or the ceremonial space as an acknowledgment of relationship.

The offering comes before asking the medicine to work with us. It is a way of recognizing that we are entering into relationship rather than simply taking an experience from a plant.

This is part of why Mapacho may be present before another medicine is served. His role can begin before the ceremony itself appears to have begun.

Clearing what does not need to remain.

Within BUFAYA, Mapacho smoke is worked with for energetic clearing and protection.

Someone may arrive carrying heavy thoughts, emotional weight, the energy of an experience they have moved through, or simply the feeling that something has been following them that they are ready to release.

Within the traditions and teachings we carry, unwanted or heavy energies and spirits are understood as not wanting to remain in the presence of Mapacho smoke. We work with the smoke to clear the person, the space around them, and the ceremonial container.

The intention is not to create fear around what someone may be carrying. It is to help clear what no longer needs to stay with them.

Protection does not always mean building a wall. Sometimes it begins by clearing the space and becoming grounded enough to know what belongs there.

BEFORE CEREMONY

Before asking someone to open, we help them arrive.

We often work with Mapacho before deeper ceremonial experiences as part of grounding, clearing, and protecting the space.

Someone may walk into ceremony carrying the entire day with them. Their thoughts may still be moving quickly. Their body may be tense. Their attention may still be somewhere outside the room.

Mapacho can become part of the transition into ceremony. The smoke, the breath, the clearing, and the presence of Grandfather medicine help mark the moment when someone begins leaving the outside world behind and arriving more fully into the space.

Ground first. Open from there.

A PLACE TO BEGIN

Not every person needs to begin with the strongest experience.

Medicine work can begin quietly.

Some people feel drawn toward medicine while knowing they are not ready to sit with a stronger psychoactive medicine. We respect that.

Mapacho can offer another place to begin.

Within BUFAYA, someone may work with Mapacho when they are seeking clearing, grounding, protection, or a gentler way of beginning to release what they have been carrying without entering a deeper psychoactive ceremony.

A person may arrive feeling mentally heavy, energetically weighed down, restless, tense, or disconnected from their body. Through the clearing, smoke, breath, and grounded presence of the ceremony, we create space for the person to settle.

People may leave feeling calmer, lighter, clearer, or simply more present in themselves. There does not have to be a dramatic experience for something meaningful to have happened.

Sometimes the pathway begins with opening. Sometimes it begins with clearing enough space to feel where you are.

OUR RELATIONSHIP

How BUFAYA holds Mapacho.

We work with Mapacho through relationship, offering, clearing, and presence.

Mapacho may be offered before ceremony, worked with through smoke around a person or ceremonial space, or held as a medicine experience of its own.

When we are clearing someone directly, we pay attention to where heaviness seems to be held and allow the smoke, breath, prayer, and presence of the medicine to become part of that clearing.

This work does not need to be dramatic. Mapacho can be quiet work. Grounding. Protective. Steady.

Grandfather does not need to be loud to make his presence known.

FEELING CALLED TO MAPACHO?

You do not have to begin by going deeper.

Sometimes the first medicine is the one that helps you become grounded enough to hear what you actually need.
